What is a Will?

A will is usually a written document, which after your death, gives instructions for how you want your individual property to be distributed, who is in charge of the property until it is distributed, and who will take care of your minor children if the other parent should die. If a person dies without having a will, the property will be distributed according to Michigan law.

For a  fee, the probate court will store a person's will for safekeeping. You can make changes to your will at any time providing that you are mentally competent. There is an additional fee to store the amended will. All wills put on file in the probate court are confidential.

Only the will of a deceased person can be viewed. To see the will of a deceased person, you must provide a copy of the deceased person's death certificate to the probate court.
