Question

I am married; however, I want to change my married name.  I would be happy to request my maiden name.  I was told by a friend to simple go to the local social security board and request this change.  Is that correct?  I want to be sure that I do this change correctly.  Is it expensive?

Answer

The law concerning change of name may differ from state to state.  This is a Michigan web site and we are only familiar with the law of Michigan.  I could not tell from your message where you live.

I do not believe you would need a change of name in Michigan.  When you marry you do not lose your maiden name.  You do have the right to use your husband's surname.  You always have the right to use your given name even when married.  When you are divorced, you still have the right to use your married name or given name without any court action.  Your maiden name  is always your name unless it is legally changed by court order.  Therefore, I believe you can just begin to use your maiden name without any further action.  There should be no charge.
