Work and Alcohol - May a minor work where alcohol is sold?
Question
I am trying to locate information on minors in establishments serving alcohol.
The case is a 14 year old going to a local VFW and helping her aunt in
the bar area. The 14 year old is my daughter and her mother has legal
custody. Could you please e-mail me with information on the law as
to whether or not this is legal. The aunt is not the legal guardian.
If I understand correctly she is staying until the bar closes and has admitted
to being in the bar talking to the drunks as she put it.
Answer
A minor must be 18 or older to work in a bar, restaurant-lounge, or party
store, unless the minor works under the "direct supervision and control"
of a parent or guardian. At 16 or 17 a minor cannot actually sell
or serve alcohol. Before age 17 a minor may not enter a place where
alcoholic drinks are sold unless the minor works there or is with a parent
or guardian.
