Minors - What are the rights of a 17 year old in criminal proceedings?

Question

What is the process when a 17 year old is held over night in jail?  How should the parents be involved?  Is it legal for the officer to take the minor to jail without a parent along? Is it legal for a minor to be questioned without a parent or legal counsel present?

Answer

In Michigan, an individual who is 17 or older is subject to the adult criminal laws and criminal procedures of the State.
