Juvenile Delinquency - Is a parent responsible for the cost of a child's
court ordered rehabilitation program?
Question
My daughter is 17 (will be 18 in 5 months). She has violated probation
numerous times & has now failed another drug test. If the court
orders her to be placed in a rehab program, am I as the parent responsible
for that bill? I already owe $12,000 for previous placements in foster
care, drug testing, counseling etc.
Answer
In Michigan, the Juvenile Code contains a provision that requires the court
to enter in its order a provision for reimbursement by the juvenile, parent,
guardian, or custodian to the court for the cost of care or service. The
order shall be reasonable, taking into account both the income and resources
of the juvenile, parent, guardian, or custodian.
